The Province of Calcutta comprises of 39 communities in 10 states and 17 dioceses and is situated in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious context. 18 communities are in the villages, 17 in towns and 4 in cities. All our communities are heterogeneous in its composition, polyvalent in character and are placed in non-Christian context. Our presence as sisters of charity, daughters of the Redeemer has contributed immensely to social and cultural transformation in the different contexts in which we are placed. We are convinced that the mission entrusted to our religious family through the church is articulated through our ministries according to the charism of our Institute. Therefore in all our apostolic endeavors we strive to respond to the needs of our times.
The service of education has been one of the creative expressions of our Charism. A good number of sisters are engaged in the service of education. We work in 20 kindergarten schools, 24primary schools 12 high schools and 8 higher secondary schools. Besides these we have 7 non-formal education centers, 8 industrial schools, 4 grihini schools, 7 coaching centers, 1 vocational training center, 14 boarding houses and 1 students’ home.

Our institutions ensure that the values of Christ be permeated and persons of all strata of society regardless of caste, creed, class and colour may find a welcome place. A high percentage of our students are persons of other faith and we aim at their integral formation oriented to Gospel values and to social and cultural growth. Value orientation classes with methodologies to suit the age groups of the students have been found profitable. We ensure that our Christian youth acquire a strong and profound faith by imparting Christian doctrine and catechetical programmes. In general all our institutions maintain healthy relationship with the various components of education, provide opportunities for counseling and vocational guidance to the youth, educate them to critical use of the means of communication and to be attentive to the needs of the marginalized of the society. Being in a pluri –cultural and religious context, students are trained to cultivate respect for all religions and the need to live in communal harmony. We also extend our assistance to neighbourhood schools and our infra-structural facilities are made available to those in need. Some of our Institutions involve the students in out reach programmes to the less privileged ones and thus inculcate in the young sense of sharing and caring.

We render health care services in 5 hospitals, of these Chilimpur alone belongs to us, we also have 19 dispensaries, 1 infirmary and 1 leprosy center. Our sisters in G. Udayagiri, Orissa take care of the Physically challenged girls and cater to their all round development so as to enable them to affirm their dignity as human persons.

Practically all our health centers, except the company hospitals, are in the rural areas where they do not have access to immediate health care facilities. We are aware that healing is more than curing and it implies restoring the whole personality. Our sisters engaged in health ministry organize self reliant programmes, Mahila Sangh and train health workers for the villages and supervise their performance to promote health and sanitation. Some of them also net work with other agencies or organization to eradicate diseases. They also collaborate with the Government ventures like ‘pulse-polio’, and other camps conducted by Rotary club, Lions club and other NGOs.

Being aware that evangelization is carrying out the mission of the church to proclaim the Gospel of the Lord through our life and service, our sisters strive to strengthen their own faith and carry out this mandate through the apostolic services of proclamation of the word, faith formation and involvement in the struggles of the people through human promotion and thus respond to the cries of the poor and oppressed. Wherever our communities exist, we work in collaboration with the laity and clergy according to the pastoral orientation given by the diocese. We teach catechism, prepare children and adults for the reception of the sacraments, conduct marriage preparation classes, participate in regularization of marriages, see to the upkeep of the church, conduct retreats, prayer meetings and devotional practices for the laity. Some of the sisters are engaged in BCC or SCC programmes. In some communities the sisters continue the traditional moffusil particularly during the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent. Some of our communities visit prisons. Some are engaged in Self help programmes, conscientisation of women and their empowerment, Mahila Sangh/ Mandal.

We believe, “it is important that impelled by the Gospel, imbued by the Scriptures, alive with the fire of our charism, sustained by prayer we move on so that we can give a new prophetic vigour to our consecrated life.”(G.Ch. XXV.14)

In the lord is our hope and he invites us “to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with our God” (Micah.6:8).
